Dr. Sebastian Baumgartner

Specialist in travel medicine and tropical medicine in 1090 Vienna

In my practice for international medicine in Vienna, I provide care as a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on travel and tropical medicine.

Before your trip, we'll discuss together which vaccinations, medications, and preventative measures are necessary or recommended for your destination. I'll inform you about relevant health risks—such as malaria, dengue fever, traveler's diarrhea, or altitude sickness—and effective preventative strategies. Upon your return, I'll be readily available to assist you with fever or any other unusual symptoms and initiate the necessary diagnostic procedures.

My services also include preventative care and treatment of chronic illnesses. I adhere to current guidelines and take the time to answer your questions.

Medical care before and after your trip

In my practice, I want to offer you a reliable medical point of contact – whether you are preparing for a trip, visiting Vienna and have a health problem, developing symptoms after a stay in the tropics, or seeking internal medicine check-ups. My mission is to identify risks early, explain them clearly, and prevent or treat them with evidence-based measures.

Thanks to my training at the Favoriten Clinic, my studies at Mahidol University in Bangkok, and my experience as head of the travel medicine vaccination service, I have extensive expertise and am up-to-date with the latest medical advancements. This allows me to provide you with clear recommendations and medically sound, personalized care.

Info

As a private physician without a contract with the national health insurance, I can take sufficient time for my patients.

What are the most common health problems after a trip to the tropics?

Health problems can arise in the first few days, or sometimes even weeks, after returning from a trip to a tropical or subtropical region. In my travel medicine consultations, I see three symptom groups particularly frequently:

Punkt

Fever or flu-like symptoms

Fever after a trip to the tropics is considered an important warning sign. It can be caused by malaria or other infections, among other things, and should always be investigated by a doctor as soon as possible.

Punkt

Diarrhea or persistent gastrointestinal problems

Traveler's diarrhea is the most common illness after long-distance travel. Diagnosis is essential, especially in severe cases, with blood in the stool, signs of dehydration, or if it persists for several days.

Punkt

Skin rash, itching or skin changes

Dermatological complaints are among the most common symptoms after travel. It is important to consult a doctor if skin changes occur or are accompanied by fever.

If you experience any of these symptoms, please make an appointment for a medical evaluation as soon as possible. If you develop a fever after traveling to the tropics, you should seek medical attention particularly quickly, as some underlying causes may require immediate treatment.
